Browning Patent was in 1915 And that was basically the Remington Model 17 with a few changes. Model 17 was only available in 20 gauge.As an FYI to anyone else, Ithaca offers a service for the pre-1963 Model 37s where they machine the receiver to accept current production M37 barrels which, by the way, are interchangeable without fitting. I have 2 Ithaca's from the late 1940's in 16 gauge. I refinished and tubed one with steel safe choke tubes. I have a lot of bismuth shot as well to feed the other. I bought a short skeet barrel for my son's M37 from the late 60's, another 16 gauge, and steel 4's for ducks have not hurt its rotoforged barrel.
