I had to disconnect the battery and afterwards the defrost light will blink for about 10-20 seconds when the vehicle is started. Nothing will work while the defrost light is blinking but once it stops, all hvac controls will work.

On my previous FDII patriot and my current FDII Compass, both of which I have severely beat up offroad I have never had that light come on to indicate an overload (at which point you are a fwd suv). The driveshaft always turns but you should be able connect and disconnect power to rear wheels using the 4x4 switch. If the rear wheels always have power the ECC may be permanently stuck and need replacing. .
