I may be wrong, but I believe that it's based (loosely) on Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en. I'm curious why this show isn't more well received. I get that the acting isn't exactly incredible. But the world/lore/design are all really incredible. And I think there is plenty of mystery and allure to keep it compelling.
