Main reason is that at 14str/40dex the Uchigatana has 420 attack rating and the Balder Side Sword has 379. Against enemies with high physical resistance that extra ~40AR is pretty noticeable.

The difference isn't very much. However, Falchion has a bit less reach than Uchi does, but it attacks a bit faster and has bleed damage built in. Both are very good weapons regardless. Ya but more damage AND bleed seems a bit more substantial than whatever the Uchi can offer.
