The Sportsman has a "crimped tube" that only holds two rounds whereas the regular 11-48 will hold 4 rounds (plus one in the chamber). I picked up my old 11-48 at a gun show many years ago. I think I paid $50 for it and it is still in great condition. The code on the barrel indicates it was made in 1950.

That should definitely loosen things up. As far as removing the pin, yes after it's driven down, you should be able to remove the firing pin. Mine was to long and bottoming out on the slide before it cleared the bolt.
